Back to School

We bid thee adieu, fair summer…

The beginning of September is always an exciting but daunting time for us. (I suppose it is for everyone starting school!) We are trying out new curriculum, picking up where we left off with old curriculum, and I am, once again, committing myself to being the most patient, most loving, most understanding teacher/mom there is. Can I do it this year? Can I really have the peace that passes understanding rule my heart for at least a week?
We shall see!
The children seem ready, though. Because I could not take them out on their annual “school dates” with Mom (because of the not being able to drive thing), Jason picked out individual pints of ice cream for them to eat while I talked over their goals, likes and dislikes about school, and what their favorite things to do & learn are. (BTW-we got Aiden coconut ice cream because we didn’t want him to have dairy & it was so good!)
Here are some highlights of our “dates”:
Among other things, Asher said he really wanted to work at Subway! The boy does like to eat, after all. He is looking forward the most to playing baseball in the spring and thought it would be really cool to relate his math to baseball. I haven't done a search yet, but maybe there is a website with baseball math problems! He is also kind of excited about his physics course because his other interest is war planes.
Autumn's goal for the year is to finish her novel and paint more. Her math seems the most challenging thing to her. She would also like to get up on time and make breakfast for us all everyday. Isn't that awesome? Other than write books and illustrate them, her career goal is to be a mom.
I chose human anatomy for Aiden's science this year and he is not looking forward to it at all! He wanted me to pick marine biology instead! So maybe I will rush through anatomy and move onto oceans quickly. Aiden also wants to do a lot more art and drawing this year, so I plan to have him to lots of Draw, Write, Now pages (a sort of drawing & handwriting book set). My other favorite thing to do for art is to have them pick out a favorite page of a book and copy the drawing and one sentence. Aiden's career goals: be a regular Dad, fireman, some sort of dog worker, or invent video games.
There's my homeschool plan in a nutshell.
